Project Description

Nestled at the foot of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak and most iconic landmark, is the small, welcoming diverse and vibrant community of Moshi that you will call home.

Most rural communities suffer from a lack of education, malnutrition and food poverty. As one of the most powerful tools in overcoming poverty, empowering individuals and strengthening communities, education is vitally important.  Together with African Impact, you will work with rural communities based around Moshi to better their education and life choices, empowering them to lift themselves, and their community, out of poverty.

Our projects take a holistic approach to education. We work with all demographics within the community from teenagers and adults to single mothers, widows and people with disabilities. All our projects are designed to address the key needs the community themselves have identified. This is the perfect project for anyone wanting to make a huge impact on the local lives of a rural community.

If you want to make a huge impact on the lives of a rural community, learn more about Tanzanian culture, the local tribes and the language this is the project for you. And you’ll get to visit some of the best and most incredible safari destinations in the world.

Location Highlights

Moshi is a buzzing tourist town at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s small and friendly and everyone is extremely welcoming and you will feel at home in no time at all! You will encounter many of your students as you stroll around during your lunch break, after project or at the weekend. Moshi is packed with cafes, restaurants, bars and local amenities as well as many hotel lodges with swimming pools where you can spend the weekend relaxing, all within walking distance of the volunteer house. It is also the hub to Tanzania’s best safari’s locations like Kilimanjaro, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater National Parks or if you prefer to take a beach weekend you can get a direct flight to the turquoise waters and white sands of stunning Zanzibar.

The Work You'll Be Doing

Maasai Literacy Programme

As a volunteer, you will help teach the Maasai tribe members to read and write in Swahili and English, opening up more employment options for them. Small, interactive groups mean you will get to watch the progress of your students and make a big impact on their future.

Adult English Programme

Tourism creates a lot of jobs in rural Tanzania. But most adults do not have the level of English needed to get jobs in this sector. Volunteers work with adults in the community who want to improve their English and get access to better jobs.

Early Childhood Education Programme

Volunteers teach English in village schools to give children a head-start at secondary education. You will develop lesson plans, work alongside local teachers and lead creative activities such as singing, playing games and more.

What Else Will I Be Involved In?

Help out on our Vocational Skills Programme, working with young adults to develop life and vocational skills to help them get jobs. Teach on our Youth Empowerment Programme, educating secondary school students on general, sexual and reproductive health issues. Spend time with the older members of the community on our Elderly People’s Programme. Host creative activities, share stories, play games and enjoy a chat with the people who live in the elderly home, improving their mental and physical health and adding joy to their lives.
